BBC presenter Amy Irons narrowly avoided exposing her underwear to football fans at the Euros

BBC presenter Amy Irons has revealed she narrowly avoided exposing her underwear to thousands of football fans while working at the Euros.

The sports broadcaster was hosting coverage of the build-up to Scotland's match with England at Wembley on top of a 40ft high cherry picker.

She was wearing a summer dress but started to fear an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction when the area was hit by gale force winds.

Amy told how she made a last minute dash to buy shorts at a nearby shop to stop people gathering below from getting an eyeful.

The 30-year-old, a presenter on BBC Scotland's The Nine programme, said: "Before I got there I was told 'When you go live you will be on top of a platform'. I got there and it was a cherry picker, I must have been 40ft up in the air.

"A shaking cherry picker in a storm would make most people scared of heights but the worst thing was I turned up in a dress.

"I thought 'I cannot go up on Wembley Way above everyone in a dress in a gale'.

"I had to go to JD Sports and buy a pair of shorts to put under my dress. The only other shops were like a Lidl and an Aldi and even the middle aisle didn't have any shorts.

"That was the less glamourous side of television."

Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland's Off The Ball programme, Amy also told how she missed out on a meeting with football legend David Beckham at the match which ended in a 0-0 draw.

She said: "I was walking out with my producer and I went to the toilet.

"I was away for a couple of minutes and within that time he met David Beckham. He was chatting away to him and got a picture.

"I was like 'I cannot believe I missed David Beckham, of all people'."
