BBC Panorama team receive threats after Danial Kinahan documentary airs

The BBC Panorama team behind a documentary on Daniel Kinahan's involvement in boxing have received threats since the programme aired.

Police in Northern Ireland issued a caution of the "unspecified threat", which was allegedly made from "unnamed criminal elements" in relation to the show.

In a statement, the BBC's Head of Current Affairs Jo Carr said: "The BBC places the utmost priority on the safety of our teams, whose journalism plays a vital role in a free society.

"It is despicable and intolerable if thugs think they can muzzle a free press through intimidation.

"We will continue to throw light into even the murkiest of corners."

The documentary, which aired on Monday, investigated the role 'mob boss' Daniel Kinahan has played in professional boxing.

Dubliner Kinahan is based in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates where he has built his profile as a boxing promoter.

The High Court in Dublin heard he was head of the crime cartel.

Representatives for the 'drugs kingpin' issued a statement last Friday ahead of the programme claiming Kinahan is just a “legitimate businessman”.

The news comes on the fifth anniversary of the Regency Hotel shooting, organised by the Hutch gang to kill Kinahan.

While he escaped, foot soldier David Byrne was shot dead in the attack.
