BBC One Show's Alex Jones cries on TV after five months without seeing mum

Alex Jones became extremely emotional as she was surprised by her mum on The One Show.

The 43-year-old has been working everyday since lockdown and hasn't been able to visit her mum.

But her co-presenter Alex Scott had a surprise for her, as she read out messages from the public on Friday's show.

The Strictly 2019 star read: "A message from Mary now who's from somewhere near Swansea who says she can't wait to see her daughter, who she says she hasn't seen in 16 weeks."

Alex Jones pressed a hand to her chest as Alex Scott continued: "In fact, she can't wait any longer and here she is, actually."

The Mirror reports that Alex gasped as her mum's face was shown on screen: "Oh no! Oh mum!"

She sounded emotional as she hid her mouth with her hands: "Hiya mum! It's only going to be - how many days now? Five?"

Her mum Mary was close to tears as she replied that it had been "five very long months".

Mary wiped away some tears as Alex struggled to look at the screen again, saying: "This is the first time I've seen her get quite emotional."

Alex Scott confirmed that Alex Jones would be going away for two weeks to be with her family for the first time in months.

Alex replied as her voice wobbled: "It's been a real privilege to come to work every day with you lot.

"And thanks, as well as my family, for getting me through this really weird time.

"It's been a real honour to do this job."

*The One Show airs weekdays at 7pm on BBC One
