BBC One's Dracula adaptation leaves viewers 'nervous to sleep' after gruesome first episode

The first episode of BBC One's new miniseries Dracula left viewers afraid to go to bed thanks to scenes featuring a decapitated nun and bloodthirsty babies.

The new TV adaptation, scripted by Sherlock's Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, follows English lawyer Jonathan Harker (John Heffernan) as he travels to Transylvania to meet new client Count Dracula (Claes Bang).

One horrific scene saw Harker chased by zombies in the Count's castle, while another saw one of Dracula's brides drain his blood.

But things got even more gruesome when the Count burst out of the body of a wolf when attacking the monastery where Harker was being kept.

Soaked in blood and fully naked, Dracula confronts Sister Agatha (Dolly Wells) - who is later revealed to be Agatha Van Helsing, Dracula's arch-nemesis, in a twist on Bram Stoker's classic novel.

The last moments of the episode saw Harker confront the vampire slayer and Harker's beloved fiancee Mina, only for him to be revealed as Dracula in disguise.

Twitter users had plenty to say about the gruesome scenes, with one writing: “Not been scared in a long time, but Dracula has me nervous to go to sleep!.”

Another added: “ Watched #Dracula #draculabbc last night. Let's just say... I didn't sleep well and @Markgatiss and Steven Moffat should see a therapist.”

“So....did any one actually manage to sleep last night? #Dracula,” asked a third user.

Describing their fear, another said: “How the hell am I supposed to sleep tonight @BBCOne? #Dracula was terrifying but brilliant. I will keep a light on for sure.”

Dracula continues on BBC One tonight at 9pm.
