BBC One facing backlash over 'shameless' Twitter publicity stunt for Killing Eve

BBC One is facing a backlash from fans over a Twitter publicity stunt for Killing Eve .

The channel's official Twitter account appeared to go haywire this morning as an anonymous hacker seemed to take over.

The perpetrator soon gave their name as Villanelle, the cold-blooded assassin from the BBC thriller, revealing it was part of the series two promo campaign.

The messages included scary references to the character's stalking of title character Eve, including: "Remember, I know where you live," and "I'm going to make you sorry, baby!"

The takeover went on for more than an hour before the BBC posted: "Errrrrr.... this is BBC One. Not quite sure what happened... We seem to have lost control there, give us a sec."

Another tweet added: "Oops, we're back. Sorry about that!"

Some Killing Eve fans loved the takeover, but many were left furious over the "shameless" publicity stunt.

One even suggested it was concerning for such menacing tweets to be posted on a BBC page.

They wrote: "At any point while concocting this idea, did you consider that aping aggressive stalker behaviour on a public forum had the potential to be at best seriously troubling for a portion of your audience?

There were tweets about violence (@BBCOne/Twitter)

"Public funds paid for this. The least you could do is set it up and hashtag it."

Another tweeted: "Reported as spam. If this is the level of professionalism in the BBC you don't deserve a licence. Infantile rubbish."

A third added: "Blocking BBC One now," and one more commented: "PR fail. Stop hits."

Another meme simply stated: "Shameless".
