BBC NI The Open documentary looks back at Shane Lowry's memorable triumph

A special, one-off documentary looking back at The Open at Royal Portrush earlier this year is to be shown on the BBC this week.

The Open at Royal Portrush will reflect on "Northern Ireland's biggest and most successful sporting event," which was staged on the Dunluce Links in July.

It was the first time golf's oldest major championship had been held in Northern Ireland since 1951.

The champion, Shane Lowry, will reflect on what it was like to lift the Claret Jug, while the programme will also feature interviews with Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke, Graeme McDowell and Padraig Harrington.

The programme description reads: "This documentary finds out from those who made it happen what it was like to stage the Open in Northern Ireland for just the second time in the event's history."

The Open attracted 237,750 fans to Royal Portrush across the week as Lowry cruised to a six-shot victory.

The 32-year-old Offaly native became the fourth Irishman after Harrington, Clarke and McIlroy to lift the famous Claret Jug.

Wilma Erskine, the former general secretary of Royal Portrush golf club, was earlier this week awarded an OBE for her services to tourism and golf after being recognised as a key figure in bringing the Open back to Northern Ireland.

The Open at Royal Portrush is on BBC1 NI at 8.30pm on Monday, December 30.
