BBC newsreader Huw Edwards' 'classy' England Euro 2020 message - but not everyone is happy about it

BBC newsreader Huw Edwards has revealed he will be supporting England as they take on Italy in the final of Euro 2020 at Wembley Stadium this evening.

Along with a picture of a 'Welcome to England' road sign, he tweeted this morning: "It’s very simple. My English friends happily supported Wales in Euro 2016 so I’m returning the compliment for England."

The Llangennech broadcaster's classy tweet got plenty of praise on Twitter, including from Neil Dawson, who wrote: "Thank you Huw. I was supporting Wales and Scotland before they went out. Was in north Wales last week and had an amazing time. It's an amazing place. The animosity that we got during the Ukraine game was more than I'd expected to be honest."

Huw's tweet...

Stuart Griffiths added: "Exactly the same - the support in Farnham, Aldershot and Farnborough I had and witnessed for Wales was ace, so repaying the support." Simon Hughes added: "I too am Welsh and will also be supporting England v Italy tonight, most likely quite passionately. I’m sure I’ll get over it."

But Huw's stance was never going to win everyone over, with some passionate Welshmen doubling down on their desire to see England lose in the final this evening.

One person wrote: "This is an impeachable offence", and another added: "All this time s****** on England only to do this... C'mon Huw, you can do better, I've known no English people who cheered us on Euro 2016, nor did I ask for them to. So why should we return the favour?"

And Ian McKay simply added: "That’s the Welsh presidency revoked."

Earlier in the tournament, the die-hard Welshman couldn't hide his delight at Wales's victory over Turkey, and calmly signed off from his BBC News At Ten broadcast with: 'What a satisfying day'.
