BBC newsreader George Alagiah to 'take break' as bowel cancer spreads

Newsreader George Alagiah has announced he will take a break from broadcasting after revealing the sad news that his cancer has spread.

It was back in 2014, that the 6 o'Clock News regular was first diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer, with the cancer then returning in 2017.

After taking some time off for treatment, BBC favourite George was dealt another health blow last year when he contracted coronavirus and his agent has now confirmed that the 65-year-old will now undergo chemotherapy and radiotherapy after the cancer has spread.

In a statement released on Monday, they said: "He was first diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer in April 2014. In a letter to colleagues in the newsroom Mr Alagiah said his medical team had decided to hit the new tumour 'hard and fast'.

"He is due to undergo a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy over the next few months.

"He added that working on the programme 'has kept me sane over the last few years' and 'I'm determined to come back'."

Taking to Twitter to pay tribute to George and wish him well, fellow broadcasting veteran Alastair Stewart posted: "George @BBCAlagiah is one of the finest newscasters in the business, and a lovely guy. I wish him well as he strives for a full recovery."

A fan tweeted: "Got my fingers crossed for George Alagiah. Brilliant news reader and fascinating man in terms of how is speaks about global news matters," with another adding: "Wishing George Alagiah all the best. Such a great broadcaster."

Hopeful we'll see George back on TV soon, a fourth commented: "Bloody love @georgealagiah. Horrendous how the cancer keeps returning, but he doesn’t give up and keeps fighting back. He’ll be missed, but I know he’ll be back. Take care George.
