BBC newsreader George Alagiah issues worrying update as his cancer has spread to lungs

George Alagiah has issued a worrying update on his cancer diagnosis, revealing it has now spread to his lungs.

The BBC newsreader was first diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2014 and later said the illness had spread to his liver and lymph nodes.

The 64-year-old has been the presenter of BBC News at Six since 2007 and has also been the main presenter of GMT on BBC World News since its launch on February 1, 2010.

The journalist spoke of his cancer battle to The Times, where he revealed doctors told him in April the cancer is now in his lungs.

He said there has been some relief in the fact that the word "terminal" had not been used by doctors, reports The Mirror.

He said: "My doctors have never used the word 'chronic' or 'cure' about my cancer.

"They've never used the word 'terminal' either. I've always said to my oncologist, 'Tell me when I need to sort my affairs out', and he's not told me that, but what he did tell me is that the cancer is now in a third organ. It is in my lungs."

George has also faced coronavirus this year, after testing positive for the deadly virus in March.

While that didn't prove to be as tough on his body as it could have been, he admitted he had initially kept the latest development about his cancer diagnosis secret, only telling his editor.

He said: "I said to my doctor, 'You're going to have to do the worrying for me.' I don't want to fill my mind with worry. I just know that he's a clever guy, doing everything he can."

George said his chemotherapy has increased as a result of the cancer spreading.

This is the second time that the Sri Lanka-born journalist has faced a battle with cancer after he was diagnosed with bowel cancer in April 2014 and then again in December 2017.
