BBC News host makes huge gaffe claiming Margaret Thatcher tweeted from the grave

A BBC News host was left blushing this morning after he accidentally claimed Margaret Thatcher had tweeted from beyond the grave.

Matthew Amroliwala said Thatcher, who died back in 2013, had tweeted about the US election results on Wednesday morning.

But he was getting her mixed up with her fellow former Prime Minister Theresa May, who was actually the one who had commented on the election.

Speaking to Sir Malcolm Rifkind, who was the former Foreign Secretary under Thatcher, Matthew said: "Before I ask you the next question let me just put up a tweet that Margaret Thatcher has just put out...

"Because erm... Theresa May sorry!"

Sir Rifkind appeared to be chuckling to himself about the gaffe when he appeared over Zoom.

The unfortunate mix-up left viewers on Twitter in stitches.

It was actually Theresa May that had tweeted (BBC)

One tweeted: "Margaret Thatcher tweeting according to BBC, f**k this has been a strange year."

"Bigger shock than the US election result will be Margaret Thatcher sending tweets," another posted.

A third wrote: "When you though this election couldn’t get any more dramatic... 'Margaret Thatcher' tweets."
