BBC News At Six and News At Ten could be scrapped on mainstream channels

The BBC's flagship news programmes could disappear from BBC One schedules over the next decade.

Head of news at the BBC, Fran Unsworth, told the Daily Telegraph that news programmes could be moved from television to its digital service, iPlayer.

That could spell the end for one of BBC's News At Six and News At Ten TV bulletins, filmed from Broadcasting House, London.

"Ultimately, in 10 years' time, we probably won't be consuming linear bulletins. I might be wrong about that but I doubt it.

"There might be one (bulletin) a day, but video will just be in a different space... you know, iPlayer, your tablet, your iPhone."

Ms Unsworth indicated that one of News At Six or News At Ten could survive.

Both programmes have reported a boost in ratings during the Covid-19 crisis.

BBC News At Six programmes were five of the 10-most watched broadcasts in the week ending March 29.

The 6pm bulletin on Monday March 23 - the day lockdown was announced - pulled in 8.3m viewers, almost double its usual rating. News At Ten has reprorted audiences of six million, Ms Unsworth added.
