BBC news anchor startled as camera cuts to him slouched and yawning in epic live gaffe

BBC news anchor Ben Brown has apologised after a camera cut to him by mistake.

Anchoring a bulletin earlier on Sunday, Ben was startled to realise the camera was on him as he slouched in his chair and let out an epic yawn.

"Oh!" he exclaimed, "Caught out there..."

Ben let out a small laugh, composed himself and cracked on with the headlines.

"Apologies for this dear viewers," he's since written, "I was at the end of a long shift after a 5am start when the director cut to me by mistake.

"The perils of live TV."

But viewers actually appreciated the moment - admitting it had cheered them up a bit amid all the doom and gloom in Covid news.

"Crying with laughter," one wrote, "You've cheered up my self-isolation no end."

Another offered: "That's hilarious! You’ve brightened everyone's day with that clip!"

A third insisted: "No apologies needed - it was some much-needed light relief from all the news this weekend."

Another recent live gaffe saw Simon McCoy struggle to contain his laughter as a classical pianist played music to monkeys.

"He'd previously spent more than a decade playing to elephants," he said, before a laugh burst from his lips, "at retirement sanctuaries."

Simon looked back at the camera with the hint of a smile.

But his composure didn't hold as he couldn't stifle another laugh as he said: "Now the weather, with Matt Taylor."

And meteorologist Carol Kirkwood has seen her fair share of live blunders.

Speaking on a video call from Greenwich Park, she told the studio: "The sun is beating down. We've seen lots of doggers."

Realising her mistake, she added: "Not doggers, of course. Lots of dogs and joggers this morning - and the forecast for this week..."

Later, Carol tweeted: "That will teach me to try and say joggers and dog walkers in the same sentence!!! Sorry!"

In another, Naga Munchetty struggled to suppress her laughter.

"Very windy," Carol declared, "and unsettled even into next week.

"Won't be playing much tennis!"

"Not much tennis, did you say?" Naga asked her.

"Not much, no," Carol remarked, "Balls will be blowing everywhere."

Naga started to laugh before Carol clarified: "Tennis balls!"
