BBC New Comedy Awards, which helped launch the careers of John Bishop and Peter Kay, announces free Swansea gig

Fancy following in the footsteps of some of the country's top comedians? An exciting opportunity has arisen for would-be comics to do just that.

BBC is heading to the city's Patti Pavilion in Swansea on Thursday, September 30 as part of its nationwide search to find the best new stand-up talent in the UK.

It is for its New Comedy Awards 2021, which, since it was first launched in 1995, have helped launch the careers of many of the UK’s best-love comedians – John Bishop, Sarah Millican, Peter Kay, Jason Manford, Joe Lycett, John Oliver to name a few.

The event will see five brand new comics battle it out for a place in the grand final, where the best of the best comics from across the country will go head to head. There will be six heats, with the contest also stopping off in Croydon, Wolverhampton, Halifax, Dundee and Portrush.

It will be hosted by award-winning comic Kiri Pritchard-McLean, with judges Katy Wix, Ali Shahalom and newly appointed, BBC Young Person’s Comedy Laurette, Mawaan Rizwan.

The main prize is £1,000 and a paid commission to write and perform in a 30-minute audio pilot, mentored by a BBC comedy commissioner.

The BBC New Comedy Awards is a Phil McIntyre Television production commissioned for BBC Three and BBC One by Shane Allen, former Director of Comedy at the BBC and Fiona Campbell, Controller, BBC Three.

If you wish to apply for a free ticket to watch the event at the Patti Pavilion, you can do so by applying via the Applause Store website.
