BBC Michael McIntyre’s The Wheel: Danny Jones’ heartbreak over estranged dad and life with former Miss England wife

Michael McIntyre’s The Wheel has become a Saturday night favourite for families wanting to test their knowledge since it came to the BBC during lockdown last year.

Each week, the comedian has a string of celebrity guests as experts to help members of the public win big sums of money, with tonight's (Saturday, January 15) starring Danny Jones.

The McFly singer is from Bolton, and says that the hugely successful Brit Award-winning pop-punk band started out in Manchester.

Danny met bandmate Tom Fletcher, who was on the songwriting team for fellow rockers Busted, in the city after responding to an ad asking for a guitarist for a new boyband called V.

He turned up to the audition mistaking V for an instrumental band rather than an all-singing, all-dancing boyband, which they were intended to be.

"I was asked to find a space to dance," he told the Manchester Evening News.

"I turned up looking like Liam Gallagher and ended up dancing."

He joined the band as a teenager after growing up singing and playing guitar from a young age.

"I had a guitar at 18 months old, a plastic one I wore around my neck, and I got my first electric guitar for Christmas from my mum and dad. I fell in love with it," he said.

Now 35-years-old, his band continues to sell out arenas.

He has a four-year-old boy, Cooper Alf Jones, with former Miss England Georgia Horsley, 35.

Georgia, who is deaf in her right ear after a bout of meningitis as a two-year-old, worked as a florist and a model during her youth, before her life changed after entering the competition in 2007 when she was 21.

The couple met in 2009 before marrying in 2014, after he popped the big question while on holiday in Cyprus.

Paying tribute to his devoted wife Georgia, Danny told HELLO!: "She is amazing, she makes me very proud. Every time I am on my way home, I just get really excited to see them. She keeps us all together."

A proud father, The Voice Kids coach has previously opened up about needing therapy after his own dad walked out on their family home when he was 18.

The trauma triggered anxiety attacks, which led to him turning to his bandmates.

Danny told the Mirror in 2019: “I remember talking to Dougie (Poynter) and saying, ‘I’ve got these weird feelings, hot sweats, my heart rate goes up, I feel unstable, I can’t think straight’, and he said, ‘Me too, man’.

"As soon as he said that I knew I wasn’t the only person.

“As a band, we knew we had issues we needed to sort out but we weren’t overly open.

“Tom (Fletcher) recommended a guy he saw for his bipolar. I went to therapy four times. I saw someone who told me to breathe out a bit.

“They explained what was actually happening to my body. You don’t understand your own brain.”

While his estranged father got back in touch in 2017, their relationship hasn’t healed fully.

Danny added: "It’s a shame with my dad. I chose not to speak to him because of how much pain I felt at the time.

“He’s still my dad at the end of the day, but it’s still difficult.

“Being a dad myself, I now know what being one takes.”
