BBC medical drama Holby City donates ventilators from set to NHS Nightingale hospital

The BBC have donated fully functional ventilators from the set of medical drama Holby City to be used on real life patients fighting coronavirus infection at the new Nightingale Hospital in London.

The equipment - which is used as props on the hit BBC One show – will help patients fight the killer virus which can attack the lungs and leave sufferers unable to breathe.

Taking to social media on Friday, the BBC revealed that they were taking action to help the national fight against COVID-19 by boosting the equipment at the Nightingale hospital in East London.

A photograph shared by the BBC Studios Twitter account showed equipment being carefully delivered to the mega hospital from the back of a van.

Holby City executive producer Simon Harper said: "We are only too happy to help out and do what we can for the courageous and selfless real-life medics."

East London’s ExCeL Centre in Royal Victoria Docks was transformed into the new Nightingale hospital in just nine days to help the NHS cope with the huge number of COVID-19 patients being admitted - with 4,000 beds being available in the building.

Similar new Nightingale facilities have been created in Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol and Harrogate – while two more will be constructed in Wearside and in Exeter.

Fans of Holby City shared their approval of the producer’s decision to donate the equipment to the national cause against coronavirus.

One fan tweeted: “That is brilliant!! Well done BBC.”

The first patients arrived at the NHS Nightingale hospital on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the NHS Nightingale said: "Our first patients have now been admitted to the NHS Nightingale London, as planned.

"There is also treatment capacity available in other hospitals across London to complement the care being provided at the London Nightingale."

The NHS Nightingale confirmed on social media it was now operational and thanked other emergency services for their assistance in transporting patients.
