Everton made it two wins from two in the Premier League on Saturday with a 5-2 thrashing of West Bromwich Albion.
New signing James Rodriguez was instrumental in the victory, drawing praise from manager Carlo Ancelotti.
But it was Dominic Calvert-Lewin who caught Match of the Day pundit Jermaine Jenas’ eye.
The striker grabbed the first hat-trick of his Everton career, having scored the Blues’ winner against Tottenham in their first game of the 2020/2021 season.
Former Newcastle United and Tottenham midfielder Jenas was effusive in his admiration for Calvert-Lewin.
He said on Saturday night’s MOTD: “What I love about his performance today was his maturity.
“When you’re young, you can be over-enthusiastic, run all over the place and not in the right place when the ball does get delivered.
“Today, the discipline he has to stay central, he doesn’t come out the width of the six-yard box and that’s where top strikers get their goals.
“He didn’t have many touches during the games but I’ve loved watching him grow. Carlo Ancelotti has been giving him advice and he’s listening, taking it on board.
“He got his hat-trick without being massively involved and that’s what the best strikers do. All his goals have come from those central areas, he looks on the run to get a bag of goals.”
Fellow MOTD pundit Danny Murphy heaped praise on Colombian international James, who also scored in the game against West Brom, and Brazilian forward Richarlison.
The ex-Liverpool midfielder said: “They give Everton such a great balance.
“I thought Richarlison was the man who dragged Everton back into the game after West Brom started well. I love his running off the ball, when you played against a packed defence, running in-behind is so important.
“The quality he (Rodriguez) gives Everton, fantastic passes and finding those little holes.
“Richarlison commits people, he takes responsibility. James is the bit of quality Everton were missing last season, he starts on the right but gets into those dangerous positions.
“It’s not just picking the pass but having the courage to try to make things happen. The only disappointment was that Everton fans weren’t there to witness his quality.”
