BBC Martin Roberts' warning as 'mystery' illness left him hours away from death

Martin Roberts issued a warning after he received emergency heart surgery yesterday.

The Homes Under the Hammer presenter was rushed to hospital after experiencing chest pains. He issued an update from his hospital bed yesterday to assure followers he is "still around, thank goodness".

The Warrington entertainment personality provided an update on his condition on the Jeremy Vine show. He said: "They said I was within a couple of hours of dying potentially. The pressure forcing the exterior sac of the heart was filling with fluid.

"They took a litre and a half of fluid and that was stopping it from expanding which it needs to do to push blood around your body."

Martin said doctors are still working on what caused the problem and issued a warning to anyone experiencing similar symptoms. He said: "The message is if you have breathing problems. If you have chest pains. If I didn't go to hospital then I would be dead."

Fans rushed to offer messages of support after the 58-year-old issued the health update with his followers on Thursday.

Malachi London said: "They’re watching over you and why wouldn’t they you are a kind caring soul, sending hugs and wishing you a speedy recovery". Lisa Heathershaw said: "Aww mate, sending you get well wishes. At least you're watching the best daytime programme".

Susan Jackson said: "Omg that's an awful shock, take care and speedy recovery x". Callycatori said: "Speedy recovery, glad you're on the mend. Very scary".
