BBC licence fee set to increase by £3 from April 1

The cost of the annual television licence fee will increase by £3 from April 1, the BBC has said.

The total price will rise from £154.50 to £157.50.

The fee is set by the Government, which announced in 2016 that it would rise in line with inflation for five years from April 2017.

The new cost is the equivalent to licence fee payers of £3.02 per week - or £13.13 per month, the broadcaster said.

The price change will not currently have an impact on the free over-75s TV licence.

The announcement comes less than a week after the BBC said it will cut 450 jobs in a bid to "modernise its newsroom” and save £80 million.

High-profile presenters could be among those who lose their roles and staff will be shed from Newsnight, 5Live and the World Service.

Age UK has criticised the price rise of the television licence fee and charity director, Caroline Abrahams said a £3 a year increase may not sound much but will be "yet another blow to the hundreds of thousands of over-75s who will struggle to afford a TV licence from June".

“The clock is ticking and, with only a few months to go, the BBC and the Government must urgently sit down and broker a solution to the TV licence debacle," she said.

“Although the poorest older people, those eligible for Pension Credit, would supposedly continue to be entitled to a free TV licence under the BBC’s proposed scheme, we know that some two in five of all those eligible don’t claim, in which case they and others whose incomes are only just above the line are set to face horrible decisions over whether they can afford to continue to watch TV at all.

“We urge the Government to act swiftly to do the right thing and take back responsibility for this important welfare benefit.”

The BBC faced backlash on social media for increasing the cost.

One Twitter user said: "So the BBC have just announced that the licence fee is going up in April, on the back of cutting 450 jobs from BBC News... surely its time to reform their funding methods."

Another asked if there was a need for the the BBC at all.

"Time to scrap BBC and rebrand as a commercial media broadcasting just like all the rest," they said.

"In this day and age there is no longer a need for license fee to be paid by tax payers etc."

Last week, Match Of The Day host Gary Lineker said that buying a TV licence should not be compulsory.

He said that if you made purchasing the licence optional, "you would lose some people, but at the same time you'd up the price a bit".
