BBC journalist in Ukraine stops live RTE Morning Ireland interview mid-sentence over 'man with gun'

A BBC reporter in Ukraine was forced to urgently halt an interview with RTE on Wednesday morning after he was confronted by "a guy with a gun".

John Sweeney has been reporting from the centre of Kyiv as the Russian invasion enters its seventh day.

The Ukrainian capital continues to be a target with air raid sirens alerting citizens again overnight to immediately seek shelter.

A 65-kilometre convoy of Russian troops is approaching the city, while five people were killed after a TV tower was struck on Tuesday.

Mr Sweeney joined RTE's Morning Ireland on Wednesday to discuss the situation on the ground but had to pause the live interview after a worrying development.

He visited the site of the destroyed TV tower and recalled seeing blood on the ground, as well as a mass of rubble and the remains of civilians across the street.

While discussing the horrific scenes, he informed RTE presenter Gavin Jennings that he was approaching a checkpoint and may need to show his passport.

He then spoke briefly about the war, before quickly saying: "I've got to stop, hold on, there's a guy shouting at me with a gun."

People listening to the interview at home, several people voiced their concern at Mr Sweeney's sudden need to stop the conversation after the man with a gun approached him.

One person said on Twitter: "Listening to @johnsweeneyroar on @morningireland and he had to end the transmission because a soldier with a gun was shouting at him. Hope you're okay John!"

A second said: "'There’s a guy shouting at me with a gun, I gotta go' - journalist @johnsweeneyroar on @morningireland just now."

A third commented: "'There’s a guy shouting at me with a gun, I have to go, bye' - @johnsweeneyroar signing off his interview on @morningireland suddenly. Scary enough. Hope he’s okay."

After a few minutes, Mr Sweeney returned and resumed the interview after the confrontation passed without incident.
