BBC Inside Out to feature Newcastle drag queens in its latest episode

Newcastle has a thriving drag scene and five of its stars will steal the spotlight on the latest installment of a BBC investigative series.

On Monday night, former Look North reporter Chris Jackson will host a brand new episode of BBC Inside Out North East and, as well as an entrepreneur making a mint out of trainers, and the forgotten engineer who helped light up Britain, the spotlight will fall on well known performers Dixie Swallows, Mutha Tucka, Travisty, Gladys Duffy and Choriza May.

Each are well known faces around town, with Dixie resident DJ at Times Square nightspot Rusty's, while Mutha, Travisty, Gladys and Choriza are snapped in action at Billy Bootleggers, where they hosted weekly watch parties and cabaret nights before Christmas for each episode of Ru Paul's Drag Race UK.

Mutha has travelled Europe with Klub Kids UK, with Travisty also helping support big names from Ru Paul on tour, while Gladys and Choriza are both former winners of Drag Idol Newcastle.

You can watch a preview for the show, which will air on BBC1 on Monday, January 27 at 7.30pm, in the video above where you will see Mutha open up about the political backdrop to some of her performances, while, during a busy shift at Rusty's, Dixie, who has previously led the Newcastle Pride march, talks about the importance of breaking down barriers and stereotypes.
