BBC Gardeners' World star Monty Don issues stark warning after beloved pooch is 'impaled'

BBC Gardeners' World presenter Monty Don revealed his beloved dog Nellie survived a horrific accident on Monday.

The 70-year-old said adorable Nellie "speared her throat" on a stick and was incredibly lucky not to have been killed.

The five-year-old golden retriever was rescued by a vet and is now recovering at home, but Monty hoped the incident would be a lesson to all dog lovers.

He urged people not to throw sticks for dogs to fetch, as this is how Nellie suffered her injuries.

He wrote a post on Instagram, where he has 192,000 followers, alongside a picture of Nellie.

He wrote: "Last night Nellie had a very near miss. Chasing a stick, she impaled herself on it and speared her throat, missing two arteries by millimetres.

"Thanks to our brilliant vet, working at night, she is fine- if very sorry for herself. So please DON'T THROW STICKS FOR DOGS."

One of Monty's followers disagreed with him and questioned his stance on sticks, commenting: "Hang on Monty. Dogs love chasing, fetching and carrying sticks!

"And they're a darn sight more eco-friendly than anything manufactured we might use instead.

"Condemn the use of sharp sticks and I'm with you."

Monty replied: "They do – Nell is obsessed by it. But this was just something she picked up in a field.

"By all means let them pick and carry them - but don't throw them. My vet says this kind of damage and worse - happens all the time."

Nellie's accident comes just months after Monty's dog Nigel died aged 12 in May, after a sudden illness.

A tribute was played to him on the show as a montage of clips of Monty and Nigel played, leaving viewers overwhelmed with emotion.

Monty has since revealed he had a memorial for Nigel in the garden, a pot specially crafted with Nigel's name, dates of birth and death.
