BBC executive issues update on Top Gear on Freddie Flintoff recovery

A BBC executive has issued an update on Top Gear after filming was halted. Filming has been suspended for the new series of Top Gear after Andrew 'Freddie' Flintoff was injured and there has been no announcement on when it will return

The 45-year-old former England cricketer was taken to hospital following an accident at the BBC show's test track in Surrey on Tuesday 13 December. At the time, the BBC said Freddie's injuries were not life threatening, but a TV insider told The Sun he “could have been killed” in the crash and will need several months to get better.

Last month, the BBC announced 'it would be inappropriate to resume making series 34 of Top Gear' at the time, after an internal investigation into the incident which left Flintoff airlifted to hospital.

Freddie has been involved in an accident while filming Top Gear, having previously crashed a car in Mansfield town centre in 2019. Footage showed his car smashing through a barrier and into a market stall, but in that incident he escaped uninjured.

Chronicle Live reports an executive from the BBC has revealed that returning to film for Top Gear would be 'really inappropriate' as Freddie Flintoff recovers from an accident which took place while filming for the show back in December.

Speaking at a Broadcasting Press Guild event, chief content officer of the BBC, Charlotte Moore, was probed on if Top Gear would be returning. To which, she replied: My priority at the moment is supporting Freddie through his recovery so I think it would be really inappropriate for us to resume filming now.

“I think when we get to the point where he feels ready … and we’ll get to thinking about getting him back.”

She continued: "I think we’ve got to talk about what Freddie wants to do. When someone’s in recovery, I don’t think we would push that … I think that would be really inappropriate, I wouldn’t be happy. I think you’ve got to be really human about this and do the right thing.”
