BBC Euro 2020 coverage hit with 'England bias' complaints from disgruntled viewers

The BBC has been hit with complaints by viewers who claim that its Euro 2020 coverage has been biased in favour of England.

The broadcaster has been sharing rights to games from the delayed football tournament with rival ITV, with the BBC getting England's games against Croatia, Germany and Ukraine games so far and ITV nabbing Scotland, Czech Republic and Wednesday's semi final against Denmark.

And, while England fans are worried about a potential ITV curse against Gareth Southgate's men, the BBC's coverage of Euro 2020 has sparked a backlash for being 'too pro English,' with annoyed viewers claiming that, even when England aren't playing, the commentary team spend 'too much time' talking about them.

Reacting to the BBC's coverage of England's 4-0 win over Ukraine on Saturday, one Scottish viewer tweeted: "A little bit of bias in a football commentary is forgivable, but the BBC coverage of England against Ukraine is more akin to cheerleading.

"I wonder if the commentators buy their own pom poms or if they come off off the licence fee."

Another ranted: "I've complained about the bias at world cup's and euro's for years. Even when england aren't playing they continually talk about them. British broadcasting company! 'That' s a laugh'

In a statement about the complaints it has received to date, the BBC said: "We’ve received some complaints about our Euro 2020 coverage, from people who think our commentators or presenters are biased in favour of England."

Stating the fact that its commentary team for Euro 2020 has strong representation from Scotland and Wales, as well as England, alongside international players like Jurgen Klinsmann and Cescs Fabregas, the broadcaster added: "We are proud of the expertise and experience that our team are bringing to football fans across the UK, and don’t agree that our line-up shows any bias towards any one team.

"Our football coverage is watched by a very diverse audience, each with differing views and opinions, and for that reason we aim to reflect those across our programmes.

"We appreciate that not everyone will enjoy every one of our presenters, pundits, or commentators, but we are proud of the range of talent and expertise our Euros 2020 team bring to our coverage."
