BBC EastEnders fans have 'goosebumps' over heartbreaking knife scene

BBC Eastenders viewers had "goosebumps" tonight after a heartbreaking storyline was revisited by Stacey Dooley and cast members on EastEnders: Secrets from the Square.

The popular soap has been airing weekly specials presented by Stacey Dooley, who is joined by a different pair of cast members in each episode.

Tonight saw Stacey sitting down with actors James Bye and Davood Ghadami, who play market regulars Martin Fowler and Kush Kazemi.

In 2018, Kush's brother Shakil was stabbed to death by a gang in an episode shown in May of that year.

Shakil, who was played by Shaheen Jafargholi, was fatally stabbed in a knife attack after his friend Keegan Baker stole a bike.

His funeral was a ground-breaking episode which featured the families of real-life knife crime victims.

The episode concluded with the families of the real-life victims standing outside the church, holding up pictures of their loved ones, as the coffin was carried past to the sound of Abide With Me.

Actor Davood Ghadami spoke of his fears and desire to "get it right" and honour the victims and their families with the hard-hitting storyline.

He said: "Thank god I'm pretending, is a simple way to put it, I'm privileged I'm pretending."

Viewers took to Twitter to share their thoughts.

Angie said: "Wow, the knife crime victims scene from Shakil’s funeral still makes me go cold."

Sarah said: "This scene gives me goosebumps Everytime. It’s stunning."

Tasha commented: "Shakil’s death was so heartbreaking".

Mike said: "That funeral scenes were difficult because it was real people who have suffered from knife crime".

Nadine said: "That episode with the real like relatives of the victims of knife crime was incredibly powerful and heartbreaking."

Sarah added: "Oh no not Shaki’s death. It breaks me".
