BBC drops Former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan from upcoming Ashes tour

Michael Vaughan has been left out of the BBC team for the upcoming Ashes tour of Australia.

The BBC said it had taken the decision to avoid a potential "conflict of interest" in relation his reported involvement in the ongoing allegations of racism against his former team-mate Azeem Rafiq.

Eccles-born Vaughan, 47, was also dropped from his BBC radio show earlier this month after being implicated in the accusations. He first joined the program as a summariser in 2009.

The former batsman has said he is "very disappointed" about not attending the future tour, and reportedly desires to be "part of the solution, listening, educating myself and helping to make it a more welcoming sport for all".

A BBC spokesperson said: “While he is involved in a significant story in cricket, for editorial reasons we do not believe that it would be appropriate for Michael Vaughan to have a role in our Ashes team or wider coverage of the sport at the moment.

"We require our contributors to talk about relevant topics and his involvement in the Yorkshire story represents a conflict of interest."

Yorkshire County Cricket Club professional Rafiq, 30, who was born in Karachi, Pakistan, alleges that during a championship match for Yorkshire 12 years ago, Vaughan told him and a handful of other players, "too many of you lot, we need to do something about it".

Former bowler for Pakistan Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, as well as England leg-spinner Adil Rashid, have supported Rafiq's statement, also claiming to have heard Vaughan's comment.

Former seamer on their team Ajmal Shahzad claims not to have heard these comments made, however, despite being present on the same day.

Vaughan wholeheartedly denies all allegations of racism.

England are set to play five Tests against Australia commencing on 8 December.
