BBC Doctor Who fans gobsmacked as Jodie Whittaker regenerates into former Time Lord

As Jodie Whittaker's time playing Doctor Who came to an end, with her final episode airing on Sunday, October 23, many fans were expecting to see her regenerate into Ncuti Gatwa. However, they were left gobsmacked when a former Time Lord stepped into the role.

Instead of changing to Ncuti, who has been announced as the new Doctor Who, David Tennant, who played the Doctor from 2005 to 2010, appeared on screens. This left fans very surprised and they took to Twitter.

One said: "David Tennant!!! DAVID TENNANT!!!!!! Well that was gloriously unexpected. Omg squueeeee!" and another said: "DAVID TENNANT COMING BACK TO DOCTOR WHO IS THE BEST BEST NEWS OMG OMG."

While it was announced that Ncuti would be the new Doctor, David and his former co-star Catherine Tate have been spotted on set filming, leading many fans to believe they would be seeing David as the Doctor again. However, not many expected Jodie to regenerate into David.

A glimpse of Ncuti as the Doctor was shown in the teaser clip which was aired straight over the episode. He had one line, where he said: "Someone tell me what the hell is going on here".

Doctor Who is set to return in 2023 and some scenes have been filmed in Cardiff, with one street closed and used for stunts including exploding cars. Welsh actor Anthony Hopkins has also hinted at a role in the new series when he posted a photo of himself in a phone box with the caption: "Put me through to Doctor Who. Need instructions on my next mission. Happy Sunday from across the pond." followed by a wink face emoji.
