BBC criticised as it axes live coverage of Nicola Sturgeon's coronavirus briefing

The BBC has faced criticism for its decision to stop dedicated daily coverage of the Scottish Government's coronavirus update.

Unlike Boris Johnson, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has continued to appear in front of cameras during the week to provide an update on pandemic and the government's work to tackle the virus.

Now, BBC Scotland say it will stop broadcasting the briefing as matter of course and will instead decide to do so based on editorial merit.

The decision has been criticised by politicians and commentators, who said the rising number of cases of cases and reintroduction of social gathering restrictions show there is still a need to communicate public health advice.

One SNP activist shared a letter on Twitter that he had sent the corporation, pointing out for his elderly relatives the daily briefing was the only way they could get the latest updates on what they had to do to stay safe.

Whilst coverage on the BBC Scotland channel will end, people will still be able to stream the update online on BBC iPlayer and via the Scottish Government's social media accounts.

In a statement, the BBC insisted it was taking a "consistent approach to coverage of the various government briefings across the UK nations" after the UK Government ceased to conduct daily updates.

Justice secretary Humza Yousaf joined other government ministers in criticising the decision.

The SNP MSP said: "As the number of cases is unfortunately rising it is more vital than ever that people have access to the FM's Daily Briefings. This dreadful and short-sighted decision by the BBC to stop showing some of the briefings will particularly affect the elderly (who of course suffer the worst impacts of COVID).

"These aren't political - the FM gives the latest public health messages and takes (often quite tough) questions from the Press.

"BBC should reverse their decision and show every single daily briefing."

He also urged people to write to the BBC to complain.
