BBC creates 'world’s most relaxing TV' pairing mindfulness with natural history

The BBC has created the world’s most relaxing TV, by teaming its award-winning natural history footage with the voice of a former Buddhist monk for a series about mindfulness.

Narrator Andy Puddicombe, co-founder of the Headspace app, says he believes the four episodes next month could help viewers to “transform their lives”.

As well as using clips from blue chip programmes including Planet Earth,

Frozen Planet and Blue Planet, the show also uses new footage from some of the most remote places in the world to show how nature can help us to breathe, change, rest and feel joy.

Mindful Escapes: Breathe, Release, Restore uses footage of lemurs, jellyfish and whales to help focus breathing.

Watching penguins pinching pebbles and antelope leaping in the air can help us feel more positive while images of starling murmurations or macaques relaxing in hot springs can encourage us to slow down and be calmer.

In the first film, Puddicombe tells viewers: “I’ve been guiding people in mindfulness for many years. It’s a practice that’s transformed my life and my hope is that across this series it’ll do the same for you. As we immerse ourselves in the sights and sounds of the natural world we gain a greater sense of ease, perspective and connection.”

It’s no accident that the series airs on BBC4 for four nights from September 7 - for many parents, the day their kids go back to school.

The BBC said: “These pioneering shows represent a bold new genre of programming for our times that we are calling ‘mindful nature’.
