BBC Breakfast viewers stunned by surprise guest during live broadcast

BBC Breakfast viewers were stunned by the appearance of a surprise guest during a live broadcast.

The channel's political correspondent Nick Eardley was live outside 10 Downing Street to talk to presenters Naga Munchetty and Jon Kay about the Leader of the Commons, Andrea Leadsom stepping down.

After cutting to a video of Mrs Leadsom saying that she can no longer support Theresa May and the government's approach to Brexit, viewers were happy to see Larry the Cat had appeared on the steps of Number 10.

Perhaps providing some much needed Brexit relief, many tweeted about the Cabinet Office's Chief Mouser.

Larry on BBC Breakfast (BBC Breakfast)

One said: "Hand on heart Larry is my favourite member of HM Government."

Another joked: "Larry the Cat is on the Downing Street steps - is he about to announce his candidacy, or his resignation?"

A third said: "Always great to see Larry on @BBCBreakfast"

While a fourth added: "Show more Larry, best presenter on @bbcbreakfast."

Larry the cat is a tabby and believed to have been born in 2007, making him around 12-years-old.

His official duties include greeting guests to the house, inspecting security defences and testing antique furniture for napping quality.

Number 10 also said: "His day-to-day responsibilities also include contemplating a solution to the mouse occupancy of the house. Larry says this is still ‘in tactical planning stage’."

*BBC Breakfast is on BBC One every morning from 6am
