BBC Breakfast viewers in hysterics over awkward Rick Astley blunder

BBC Breakfast viewers were left in stitches after the weatherman made a comment about Rick Astley - but was unaware the singer was listening in.

The Never Gonna Give You Up hitmaker made a virtual appearance on this morning's show as he chatted about his new single to hosts Charlie Stayt and Louise Minchin.

But the conversation ended up with an embarrassing moment for weather presenter Matt Taylor who was left red faced.

After he gave viewers the weather forecast, Charlie asked him: "Matt, are you a Rick Astley fan?"

To which honest Matt responded: "Er, not a massive one."

Charlie then said: "Well that was the wrong thing to say. He's listening and coming up in just a moment.

"I'll ask you again, are you a Rick Astley fan?"

Feeling awkward after the gaffe, faced Matt tried to redeem himself and joked: "Oh, I'm sorry. Love Rick Astley, the best. Grew up with him."

The camera then panned to singer Rick who was left in stitches at the blunder as he laughed his head off via video call.

Charlie then said: "Here he is now, he's listening in and he heard everything you said Matt. The damage is done."

Luckily, the weatherman saw the funny side and was caught laughing at the hilarious moment.

The BBC Breakfast clip was instantly became a viral hit on Twitter, with one person commenting it was “the best bit of telly this week".

Matt replied to the video, saying: "That's just cruel," alongside a row of laughing emojis.

Meanwhile Rick admitted there was no bad blood between them, as he tweeted at Matt saying: "All is forgiven."

To which grateful Matt replied: "You sir are a true gent! Thank you."

Viewers at home were left in hysterics as they rushed to the comments section to share their thoughts of the hilarious gaffe.

One fan wrote: "That was real live telly, Matt you did it very well, a true pro. Just think how much worse it could have been."

Another penned: "Brilliant! With all the doom and gloom at the moment we need more moments like this in the morning! I love Rick's music! Loved Rick's response too! Very funny!"

A third added: "Well to be fair, saying you're not a massive fan isn't the same as saying I don't like his music. But it look a lot like he got set up and ambushed!"

While a fourth agreed, writing: "Poor Matt - and poor Rick (whose music I have always loved)! Fair play to him for his response though!"
