BBC Breakfast star Carol Kirkwood 'mortified' after cringe-worthy gaffe on live TV

Carol Kirkwood was left red-faced after an awkward blunder on BBC Breakfast when she forgot her colleague's name.

The morning show was being presented by Strictly Come Dancing's Dan Walker and Nina Warhurst on Tuesday, but Nina's name temporarily escaped the meteorologist.

Finishing up her weather segment, Carol said: “So, if you haven’t got your big coat out yet Dan and…” Carol began, before pausing awkwardly.

Finally remembering her colleague's name, Carol exclaimed: “Oh, Nina! Couldn’t remember who was on - sorry Nina.

“Nina, apologies I’m your biggest fan!”

Nina saw the funny side and joked that she wouldn't "take it personally.”

To which Carol replied: “No, I’m your biggest fan. I can’t believe I forgot your name.”

Seizing the opportunity to make mischief, Dan teased: “I thought you were my biggest fan?”

“I’m your biggest fan too!” Carol laughed, with Nina joking: “We can’t trust anything you say.”

With the recent changes in presenting personnel at BBC Breakfast in recent weeks, Carol could be forgiven for not knowing who was going to be on the sofa.

Defending his colleague Dan said: "It’s very difficult Carol because we keep changing presenters all the time because Sally’s off in Leeds today, Nina’s on the sofa today.”

Nina quipped: "And aren't you on some sort of dancing show?"

To which Dan replied: "Yes, occasionally. I don't even know what day of the week it is!"

Dan will strut his stuff again on Strictly Come Dancing this weekend (BBC)

The father-of-three has come under fire from Strictly fans with many believing he should have been voted off the show weeks ago.

However sharing photo of a newspaper front page that asked: "How is Dan still in the show?", Dan took to Twitter saying: "I’m not sure but we are incredibly thankful for all the support and it’s a true privilege to be a small part of the biggest show on the telly.

"I know articles like this are sourced from a few comments on social media but each week I get thousands of messages from people who love the show and are really enjoying watching Nadiya and me dance."

Dan and Nadiya will be tackling the Rumba on Saturday's show.

Strictly Come Dancing is on Saturday on BBC One at 6.45pm.
