BBC Breakfast's Steph McGovern said she nearly threw up on her co-host as she talked about morning sickness

BBC Breakfast's Steph McGovern has opened up about the 'rough start' to her pregnancy, which nearly saw her throw up on her co-host.

The presenter announced on Sunday that she was expecting her first child with her girlfriend with a tweet reading: "I see my news is out! I am now with child."

Steph returned to work on Salford-based  BBC Breakfast this morning (July 15) and spoke about her exciting news.

"I've now got an excuse for having a belly," Steph joked.

"Thank you to everyone that’s messaged me it was quite overwhelming yesterday.

"I'm actually growing a human."

The 37-year-old denied she was pregnant 18 months ago, claiming she was 'with pot belly'.

Steph, who is due in November, also spoke about her battle with morning sickness.

When asked how she was doing by colleague Jon Kay, Steph said: "I'm all good thank you. Bit of a rough start. But I'm alright now," before adding about her early near-miss: "Charlie [Stayt] nearly got watermelon over him one morning."

Jon the quizzed her on her upcoming sleepless nights but Steph didn't seem phased replying: "That's what we do anyway."

Middlesbrough-born Steph has been inundated with congratulatory messages.

BBC Sports presenter Mike Bushell said: "That is amazing news. So exciting. Chuffed to bits. huge congrats."

Actress and comedian Dawn French commented: "Ummm... WOW!"

Helen Skelton said: "AMAZING news! Congratulations xx" and weather presenter Carol Kirkwood added: "Wonder news GG! Congratulations xxx."
