BBC Breakfast's Dan Walker apologises to Shaun Ryder over 'Mancunian' comment

Dan Walker may spend most of his days broadcasting from Salford but a slip up to Shaun Ryder left him apologising.

The Happy Mondays star appeared on BBC Breakfast on Wednesday morning with Dan and co-host Louise Minchin.

Shaun was on the programme to chat about his new music as well as his current health condition.

But with the news still dominated by the ongoing conversation around online abuse following the racist comments sent to England players after their Euro 2020 defeat on Sunday, the singer was asked for his thoughts.

Dan wanted to ask Shaun his thoughts regarding the defacing of English footballer Marcus Rashford's mural just minutes after Italy beat England on penalties on Sunday night.

The Manchester United striker as well as teammates Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho were subject to vile online racist abuse in the wake of England's loss.

The trio were targeted after they missed penalties in the final moments of Sunday’s game.

The black and white Rashford mural in Withington was vandalised but an outpouring of love soon replaced the hate when the graffiti became covered with messages, posters and even signed shirts before being restored.

But while Dan was speaking to Shaun about Rashford, the host had a slip-up, the Daily Star reports.

Dan said: "So I've got to ask you as a very proud Mancunian."

Quickly interrupting him, Shaun exclaimed: "Salfordian actually me!"

Taken aback, Dan replied: "Well ok. Apologies, Salfordian. Thank you for correcting me.

"I'm sure there are many people shouting at me as well."

They then continued on and Shaun gave his opinion on the incident.

"You can't swear on this programme, but it's sick," he said. "And I don't mean in a good way. Nasty."

Rashford said he was "overwhelmed" and "lost for words" as he thanked supporters who had been to show their support at the mural.

He posted images from the scene alongside his short message on Twitter with one image showing a note which read: "Thank you for all our dinner," which was from a six-year-old named Reggie.

The footballer has spent much of the last 16 months campaigning to end child food poverty.

He forced the government into two U-turns last year, allowing children to receive free school meals while schools were closed and during the later holidays.
