BBC Breakfast's Carol Kirkwood stunned as she makes show history with announcement

BBC Breakfast presenter Carol Kirkwood was left floored on Monday as she made show history with an announcement to viewers at home.

The 'unprecedented' news came as the show saw a shake-up to proceedings, with Carol, presenter Jon Kay and business correspondent Ben Boulos all out on location.

TV presenter Nina Warhurst was left to man the show from the famous red sofa alone as she reflected on the battle for Conservative leadership.

However, the main news of the day was taken by weather presenter Carol, as the UK faced record-breaking soaring temperatures.

The UK recorded temperatures of over 40C for the first time, as thermometers hit 40.3C at Coningsby in Lincolnshire, while 33 other locations went past the UK's previous highest temperature of 38.7C, set in 2019.

Carol took to Twitter to react to the news while hosting the show, writing: “In all my years presenting the weather I have never before mentioned a temperature of 40 Celsius anywhere in the UK. This is unprecedented heat BBC Breakfast xxx."

She went on to explain: “Temperatures are likely to be highest today in parts of the Midlands, London and East Anglia. It’s here we could reach 40 Celsius.

“Tonight temperatures for some may not fall away lower than 20C. This too could have some health implications.”

Carol is currently enjoying the trappings of being newly engaged, after the 60-year-old BBC Breakfast weather presenter showed off her engagement ring while she was live on TV from Chelsea Flower Show in May.

While at a happy point of her life, she has shared that it was difficult to cope at work when she separated from first husband Jimmy Kirkwood.

Carol had married Jimmy, a former cricket player, in the 1990s just as her career at the BBC began.

They divorced in 2008 after being together for 18 years but Carol has never shared why their marriage came to an end.

Opening up about her split, Carol told The Sun: “I was married for a long time and I got married quite young so it’s nice doing things I have the freedom to do now.”

Carol admitted that getting divorced was "all shocking to me" and that she broke down in tears behind the scenes of BBC Breakfast, when writing in her 2021 book, Under The Greek Moon.

She wrote: "In a funny way though, that helped with the healing process. I put my grief into a compartment which I kept separate from my work, otherwise I’d have ended up in a puddle of tears. Work kept me going."
