BBC Breakfast took an unexpected turn when Carol Kirkwood brought everything to a screeching halt with a moment that had viewers spluttering into their morning brews. The much-loved weather presenter was joining hosts Jon Kay and Sally Nugent via video link for her usual forecast when things went slightly off-script.
It all started off innocently enough. Jon, clearly enjoying the bright mornings, said: “Carol, isn’t it wonderful this time of year when we’re up early but it’s daylight at 4 o’clock in the morning?” Carol, ever the ray of sunshine herself, replied cheerily: “Yes! We’re heading towards the longest day, the most daylight hours in a day, Jon, which is great news. After that, it’s downhill and we’re heading back towards Christmas!” Cue the record scratch. Christmas. In June, the Express reported.
Carol clearly realised she might’ve overstepped, tweeting shortly after, “Think I may JUST have got away with mentioning Christmas there!” But the official BBC Breakfast account wasn’t about to let her off the hook that easily. They posted: “First mention of Christmas. On #BBCBreakfast Carol Kirkwood is already counting down the days… 203 to go.”
That’s all it took to set off a wave of hilarious – and slightly horrified – responses from fans. One viewer didn’t hold back, replying: “Carol, wash your mouth out.” Another moaned, “FFS, life is short enough as it is!” and a third summed it up in two words: “Oh no!”
Some tried to lighten the mood, with one person joking: “We just wish we had more daylight hours here in England,” while another claimed they’d “blocked and reported” Carol for the festive slip. One follower chimed in with: “You are wishing your life away!”
It’s fair to say not everyone was ready to hear the C word while still planning their summer holidays. But knowing Carol, it was all in good humour – a little sprinkle of mischief that certainly woke up the nation.
The weather pro kept the good vibes going later on social media when she shared a sweet birthday message for her colleague Matt Taylor, who often covers the forecast when she’s off. Posting on X, she wrote: “Happy birthday to my gorgeous, funny and brilliant friend. Have the best day lovely!” alongside a light-hearted photo of the pair at Wimbledon, with Matt wearing a party hat (digitally added, of course) and Carol sporting a sparkly tiara.
Matt replied with a playful dig of his own, saying: “Thank you lovely. Do all the 21sts add up?”
It’s these fun, unscripted moments that make Carol such a fan favourite, even if she did cause a mild panic by mentioning Christmas a whole 203 days early. Love her or not, Carol certainly knows how to get a reaction – even if it’s a slightly outraged one before 9am.
