BBC Breakfast presenters explain format change marking milestone after viewers left distracted

Those tuning into BBC Breakfast today might have spotted something different. As viewers tuned in on Tuesday, January 17, presenters Sally Nugent and Jon Kay explained the change.

The pair informed fans it was the programme's 40th anniversary, and to mark the speacial occasion, BBC Breakfast was rebranded to the original progrmme's name, Breakfast Time. The time was also shown via a blue vintage clock, with the digital time removed from screens to mark the milestone.

"Today is the 40th anniversay of the first ever addition of BBC Breakfast telelevision," Jon explained as Sally asked: "Have you noticed anything different about us?"

Pointing to the clock, she said: "It's the new clock," before Jon added: "A new clock, but it's the old clock. That is the clock that was put on the screen at exactly this time."

"The original, still the best clock, I love it," Sally said.

"We were saying that it looks kind of old fashion but it also looks kind of cool doesn't it? That sort of 80s retro thing," Jon added.

Explaining how long the format change would be in place, Sally reassured: "Don't panic everybody it's only for one day, it's only for today, just on this special occasion the 40th anniversary of the first ever breakfast programme."

Reacting to the change, one viewer wrote: "I learned to tell the time on this clock. Loving the nostalgia this morning."

"I’m not a huge fan but it’s nice to give a nod to a simpler time," said another, while a third added: "This has messed with my mind I really don’t like it! Funny how you get used to something." For more showbiz and television stories get our newsletter here.
