BBC Breakfast appearance for father and son stuck in Leeds General Infirmary for a month

A father and son who have not left Leeds General Infirmary for almost a month appeared on BBC Breakfast this morning (Saturday) to tell their incredible story.

Four-year-old Ollie Stephenson is currently receiving treatment for neuroblastoma, a form of childhood cancer. He has been undergoing chemotherapy since January - but the coronavirus pandemic means he has to shield.

For his family, it was an incredibly tough decision - but dad James is staying in hospital with the youngster, while mum Laura remains at home in Ackworth, West Yorkshire, with Ollie's younger brother, two-year-old Alfie.

The family are living 20 miles apart and they have not been together for almost a month.

"We're coming up to four weeks now," James told BBC Breakfast. "We're just in recovery now.

"It's the highlight of the day [when we video call family]. We do it a couple of times a day."

Appearing alongside Ollie and dad James was Laura, who joined in the live broadcast from the family home in Ackworth.

"Physically we're not that far away, but we haven't been able to see each other for almost four weeks now," she said.

"It's been really difficult. We've had a routine at home and we've been FaceTiming a couple of times a day.

"We've got a lot of support. We're very lucky."

Throughout the family's struggles, they are also trying to raise £230,000 so that Ollie can travel to America to receive potentially lifesaving treatment in the form of the Bivalent vaccine.

They are already more than halfway towards their target for after four months, and you can find out more or donate to the JustGiving page here.
