BBC apologises for lack of St George's Day coverage after viewer complaints

The BBC has apologised to "disappointed" viewers who deemed its St George's Day coverage "insufficient."

England's national day is celebrated on April 23 (Friday), with the Beeb marking it across various platforms.

BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast and CBeebies programming recognised the occasion, as did Radio 4, which aired a special St George's Day music programme.

However, some viewers weren't content by the level of output on programmes including The One Show and BBC Breakfast.

One fuming viewer wrote: "@TheOneShow big deal made of St David's Day & St Patrick's Day. And no mention at all of St George's day. Typical BBC. Disgusting!

Another raged: "I've been watching BBC Breakfast news from 6:00am until now at 7:24 and there has not yet been any mention of a happy St George's day! Why???"

A third tweeted at BBC Breakfast, writing: "Just a quick memo to remind you today is St George's day. Its not racist to mention it and you won't get 000s of complaints if you do."

Meanwhile, a fourth tweeted: " @BBCNews hey did you forget us brits are celebrating St George's day today! Nothing on BBC, are you ashamed to be British????"

The BBC have since released a statement admitting that they cut back on coverage to reflect the ongoing covid pandemic, which put a dampener on parades and parties this year.

A spokesperson said: "Normally there would have been traditional parades and celebrations, however, with public gatherings prohibited, due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year's celebrations will have been much more subdued and limited to people's homes, therefore resulting in fewer events to cover.

"Inevitably there may be disagreements about the level of prominence we give to stories. We're sorry you were disappointed on this occasion."

It's not the first time the BBC has faced complaints in recent weeks.

Its analysis of Princes William and Harry at their grandfather the Duke of York's funeral sparked backlash.

"We received complaints from people unhappy that Nicholas Witchell offered analysis about the relationship between the Duke of Sussex and the Duke of Cambridge, when reporting on the funeral of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh," the corporation confirmed.

But it stood by its coverage, reasoning that the Princes relationship had been a focus of great interest in the weeks before the funeral.

"This was a legitimate, impartial and proportionate part of the coverage of this story," the BBC insisted.
