BBC apologise to furious England stars Ellis Genge and Lewis Ludlam after confusing the pair in picture error

The editor of BBC Sport online has apologised to England rugby stars Ellis Genge and Lewis Ludlam after the pair were confused on the media outlet's website.

Genge had spoken to the BBC regarding the pulling down of the Edward Colston statue in Bristol earlier this week and also explored issues surrounding race.

As the main image on the article, the BBC mistakenly used an image of Ludlam alongside the caption: "Ellis Genge made his England debut in 2016 and has 18 caps."

Genge then took to Twitter to voice his frustration over the error.

He said: "I’m actually f***ed off with this happening to every mixed race/black sportsperson. [It] Must be the 15th time in less than a year just between me and Lewis Ludlam."

England team-mate Ludlam added: "I’m with Gengey on this one however, wrong mixed raced guy @BBCSport. Probably should be getting that right on an article about race issues. Not the first time this has happened."

The error sparked a furious reaction online with ex-England international Will Carling and current star Courtney Lawes among those voicing their displeasure.

The players' tweets have received hundreds of response and been shared over 1,000 times.

They also provoked a response from BBC Sport online editor Ian Singleton.

"As the editor of @bbcsport online, I wanted to message you directly and swiftly to say sorry," Singleton said in a tweet to both players.

"A wrongly captioned image from a picture agency did not get the checks that we expect. We have fallen below our usual standards and again offer an apology to you."
