BBC Antiques Roadshow guest gobsmacked after £5 car boot item valued at £1,000

An Antiques Roadshow guest was left stunned after being told his £5 car boot find was actually worth an incredible £1,000. Expert Justin Croft was presented with a manuscript and instantly knew that the document was something special, the Liverpool Echo reports.

Speaking on the BBC show, Justin said: "So we're looking at a musical score. It's quite an extensive musical score, but there are a few clues which can help us tell what it is.

"I'm immediately seeing on the top left-hand corner here, the note 'Reel nine, part one' so that tells us this is film music. This is a film score.

"Helpfully it also has a title up here. So this is The Snows of Kilimanjaro and all around the sides is the composer's stamp. This is Bernard Herrmann."

Bernard Herrmann was an American composer and conductor famous for his music for Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho and Vertigo. Asking asked how the guest obtained the score, the man said: "It came in the folder with a few other items. There seemed to be some previous research done by a previous owner.

"I found it at a car boot. The folder was on top of large box of theatre programmes and there was a man in front of me. It was offered out for £5. He didn't want it, so I gladly took it."

Justin explained that the score was Bernard Herrmann's own copy, which showed several annotations and corrections made by the composer. He said: "It's lovely when what I think is a significant piece of manuscript comes to light, and I think it does have some value...

"I'm going to say £800 to £1,000 on this." The guest, chuffed with the valuation, said: "Lovely, not bad for a fiver."
