BBC Antiques Roadshow fans think rusty bean tin glass overvalued by expert

Antiques Roadshow fans think one of their favourite experts gave an overpriced valuation for rusty bean tin glass.

Andy McConnell is affectionately known as 'Glassman' to some viewers on Twitter, many wait in anticipation of his segment on the show.

He has been a regular on the BBC One show since 2005 and has written several books about glass.

But this didn't stop viewers at home thinking he had got it wrong with item dating back to the 1700s.

Andy, who has been selling antiques since he was 14, said: "Well, it is not every day that one runs into the perfect union of a wine glass from 1780 and a rusty baked bean tin."

The people who had brought the item to be looked at said it just sits in their cupboard doing nothing and have never used it.

They wanted to know why the glass had been given a new stand made from a tin can - and how much it might be worth.

Andy said: "Someone felt strongly enough that after they broke the foot they felt compelled to ask somebody to knock up a new base for it made out of available materials.

"I think the budget for the job was a penny, they broke the bank on buying a rusty old baked bean tin."

He said it was a "rustic repair" and had been set wrong, calling it the "leaning goblet of Pisa" and said he went around Warwick the day before to find other glasses that had been given the same treatment - which he found two, a ceramic one from 1840 and a 1925 glass with silver added at the base.

Then he said: "Well, what is it worth? Well, you know, a fiver."

The guest seemed happy with the answer and said it was "excellent", but people watching at home thought it was overpriced.

Taking to Twitter, @Carol601227 said: "That's £5 more than I would spend on a bean tin glass."

@DoricChiel74 said: "Yeah. £5 for a nobbled glass. Probably cost £20p at a car boot sale."

@millwoodsjay said: "A fiver for the glass!"

@mickmar29 said "A fiver ...when they get the glass home" and posted a gif of someone throwing an item into the bin.

And @JillHudson21 said: "Fiver! Overpriced!!"

*The Antiques Roadshow is on BBC One on Sundays from 8pm and available on BBC iPlayer
