BBC announcer's moving speech was last-minute script change after Christmas news

BBC One continuity announcer Duncan Newmarch made a last-minute shake-up to his speech ahead of the Strictly Come Dancing 2020 final on Saturday, he has confirmed.

Duncan reached out to the nation in the wake of new lockdown rules and tiers being brought into the UK from Sunday.

His familiar voice is one viewers of the channel regularly hear ahead of their favourite shows.

But it was much needed on Saturday night, after Prime Minister Boris Johnson's announcement about Christmas in the UK.

London and other areas have been moved into the new Tier four, completely banning any meetings or bubbles over Christmas.

Other areas remain in Tier three and Tier two, where people can meet those outside of their household for Christmas Day only - and this is the same with Tier one.

The news has brought upset for many with the government commenting on the urgency of the matter - only to announce the news just six before Christmas.

Duncan left many in tears though as Strictly began, with him uniting the nation for a much-needed cheering up.

He said: "Now in a year that has kept us apart.

"Whether you're watching in Tyne and Wear, Devon, Berkshire or Lincolnshire... we are all watching BBC One together."

He was given heaps of praise, with many taking to Twitter to thank him for his words.

TV critic Scott Bryan wrote: "As many people have pointed out, those touching poignant words came from @DuncanNewmarch."

He replied, and revealed the script featured last-minute changes as the original might not have been "appropriate".

He told him: "Thanks Scott. After the PM's announcement, some of tonight's lines (written yesterday) just didn't work so I had some last-minute rewrites.

"Here's to the live announcers across all channels."

As the praise kept coming in, he took to his profile to thank everyone for their kind words.

He commented: "Thank you for the kind comments about my line into the @bbcstrictly final.

"After this afternoon's news I had to rewrite a handful of scripts as they didn't seem appropriate. Why live announcers can make a difference."
