BBC announce Line of Duty Season 6 set to air earlier than fans expected

Mother of God! After months of speculation and waiting, it appears that Line of Duty fans now know when the new episodes of Jed Mercurio's beloved show will arrive.

In a statement that was released on their official website, the broadcaster provided an update on their upcoming TV schedule and some of the shows that will also be airing in 2021.

In the statement, they confirmed that the new season of Line of Duty will air before the end of March 2021.

"Returning favourites on TV in the period up to the end of March include His Dark Materials, Doctor Who, Line Of Duty and Call The Midwife, alongside Top Gear, Great British Sewing Bee, The Repair Shop, and RuPaul’s Drag Race UK. Sir David Attenborough’s five-part landmark series A Perfect Planet launches on BBC One in the New Year," they state.

After COVID halted production on the new season, filming on the new series is underway in Northern Ireland and during a recent appearance on Lorraine, Jed Mercurio teased fans about what they can expect from the next series as AC-12 chase even more bent coppers.

Speaking on Lorraine, the show's writer/creator gave an insight into what production has been like during the pandemic.

"It's been pretty tough, to be honest with you. Firstly I've got to pay tribute to our brilliant cast and crew. We've been diligently and rigorously wearing masks the whole time, social distancing, sanitising any objects that pass between people, fogging spaces that we go into as well as having to take other steps such as changing scenes from interior locations to exterior locations.

"Some of our on-location shoots have been moved into the studio so that we were able to ventilate the spaces... so there has been a lot that we've had to do. We hope that these changes will be invisible to fans when they watch the series."

When asked about the plot of Season 6, Mercurio said: "Kelly McDonald is our lead for series six. Kelly plays DCI Joanne Davidson, who is the Senior Investigating Officer on a high profile murder that remains unsolved over a year after the killing and AC-12 get involved because there are question marks over her involvement in the investigation."

All will be revealed when the show looks set to air before March of 2021.
