BBC and Cerys Matthews apologise after song featuring racial slur is played on her radio show

The BBC has been blasted by listeners after a song featuring a racial slur went out on air on Sunday.

The song in question - Thomas Fraser’s cover of the 1940 song The Mississippi Shore - was played by Catatonia singer and former I'm A Celebrity Cerys Matthews on her 6 Music show at the weekend.

The song features the lyric: "I can hear them d****es singing. I can hear the guitars playing.”

And, as you'd probably expect, it didn't take shocked listeners very long to react to the fact the lyric was allowed to be broadcast.

One tweeted: "really uncomfortable with the racial slur in the lyrics of the record you just played On the Mississippi Shore. How did that get through?"

Cerys, who described Fraser's version as a "virtual" trip to the Isle of Burra, was quick to respond to the post, replying: "checking now-it shouldn’t have passed through of course. It’s a huge priority for me. Thanks for heads up."

Another listener commented: "Was there a deeply inappropriate lyric in there? Or did I mishear?"

A spokesperson for the BBC has now apologised, telling the Mirror: “Unfortunately an unedited version of this song containing an offensive term was broadcast in error on 6 Music.

"We apologise for any offence caused and will work to ensure this does not happen again.”
