BBC and blockbuster productions filmed on Merseyside in 2021

Liverpool is the second most filmed city in the UK outside of London - and 2021 was no exception.

Over the last year film crews have flocked to Merseyside to shoot their latest projects, including many high-profile productions.

After filming came to a halt for the majority of 2020, this year has been very busy for the film industry in Liverpool.

We took a look at some of the productions that were filmed across the region in 2021.

Funny Girl

Filming for Sky's Funny Girl recently got underway in Liverpool.

The new comedy series is an adaptation of Nick Hornby's novel, Funny Girl, and is set in London in the swinging 60s.

Gemma Arterton stars as Barbara Parker in the show, a young woman who has just been crowned Miss Blackpool.

The story follows Barbara as she moves from Blackpool to London, where after a series of setbacks she finds herself auditioning for a TV comedy show.

Being a woman in a largely male environment has its own challenges, but as Barbara finds her comic voice, she redefines the attitude towards funny women and reinvents herself.

The cast also includes Rupert Everett, David Threlfall, Tom Bateman and Emily Bevans.

The Curse

Liverpool city centre doubled as 1980s London for filming of The Curse.

The area around Ormond Street, Old Hall Street and Bixteth Street were transformed in September for the Channel 4 show.

Residents living in these areas received a letter through their doors notifying them of the upcoming filming which saw a road closures put in place.

The Curse is new crime-comedy drama set in London during the early 80's and follows a gang of small time crooks who find themselves involved in one of the biggest gold heists in history.

Silent Witness

Liverpool's Pier Head was transformed into a major crime scene for filming of Silent Witness.

The long-running BBC thriller is now in its 24th series and concerns the personal and professional challenges of a team of forensic pathology experts who investigate heinous crimes and use their skills to catch the people responsible.

The star of the show, Emilia Fox, who plays forensic pathologist Dr Nikki Alexander, could be seen on the set in a white forensics suit.

A huge blue and white forensics tent was set up near to the Museum of Liverpool for filming of the new season.

This is believed to be the first time the series has been filmed in Liverpool.

We Are Not Alone

Aliens have conquered Earth - at least they have in a new comedy series being filmed in Runcorn.

Cast and production crew set up in the town centre for a shoot at a café on Regent Street.

The street was transformed into a post-invasion ghost town with shuttered shops and scattered household goods plus graffiti daubed on the wall with the slogans “Aliens go home.”

A cast member either dressed as an alien or as dressed as a person trying to look like an alien was the focus of the filming when the ECHO attended.

Church Street was shut briefly during part of the shoot.

The filming is for 'We Are Not Alone', produced by Big Talk Productions - the company behind series including Stephen Merchant’s The Outlaws with Christopher Walken, Back by Simon Blackwell with Robert Webb and David Mitchell, and the sitcom Friday Night Dinner featuring Tamsin Grieg and Mark Heap.

'We Are Not Alone' is set six weeks after aliens have invaded Earth and explores the culture clash between humankind and its new masters.

Peaky Blinders

Peaky Blinders production crews were seen setting up outside St George's Hall ahead of night filming earlier this year.

Although the drama is set in Birmingham in the aftermath of World War One, Liverpool is regularly called upon to provide the backdrop for the show.

It's been filmed in Liverpool since 2012 at a variety of locations including the Welsh Streets, the Tobacco warehouse at Stanley Dock, the State Ballroom on Dale Street and in Port Sunlight.

The Ipcress File

Liverpool was transformed into 1960s London for filming of the Ipcress File back in April.

Businesses on North John Street were transformed into an old Odeon cinema, a guitar shop and hotel for the backdrop of the show.

The Ipcress File is an espionage thriller set in Berlin and London during the 1960s.

Len Deighton's novel was adapted into a six-part television series for ITV starring Joe Cole in the iconic role of Harry Palmer alongside Lucy Boynton and BAFTA award-winning actor, Tom Hollander.

The Responder

Martin Freeman was in several spotted in locations across Merseyside in May filming for new TV police thriller The Responder.

The BAFTA winner was pictured in his uniform as he performed on Richmond Row in Everton.

The Responder is centred on Chris - Freeman's character - a "crisis-stricken" urgent response officer working night shifts in Liverpool.

The show is written by ex-police officer Tony Schumacher and is being produced by Bafta-winning and Emmy-nominated Laurence Bowen.

The Almond and The Seahorse

Pitch Perfect star Rebel Wilson was spotted filming in Liverpool city centre in April.

The Hollywood actress was snapped outside Central Library and the World Museum, shooting scenes for The Almond And The Sea Horse.

The Almond And The Sea Horse is a feature adaptation of Kaite O’Reilly’s stage play, which follows the story of two couples exploring the impact of a traumatic brain injury on their lives.

Rebel was also seen filming scenes in Wirral and Crosby, where she stopped off for some lunch at the Mustard and Co restaurant on College Road.

Doctor Who

The cast and crew for BBC's Dr Who were spotted on the steps of Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral in March as they filmed the new series.

Comedian John Bishop was among the stars captured on camera as he turned to face fans and gave them a little wave.

TV crews were pictured at several locations across the city for filming of the hit sci-fi series including on Albert Dock, where the famous Tardis was uncovered.

Midas Man

Striking images show vintage cars and filming equipment set up in the Port Sunlight area of Wirral for the filming of Midas Man.

Midas Man will be directed by Jonas Åkerlund and will explore Epstein's role in the 1960s cultural revolution as well as his unparalleled yet often unheralded influence on pop music across the globe.

Actor Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, known for starring in The Queens Gambit on Netflix, will play Brian Epstein in what will be the first feature film about his life.

The filming at Port Sunlight was focussed on Hulme Hall, where The Beatles played their first concert after Ringo Starr replaced Pete Best as drummer.

Ridley Road

Liverpool was transformed into London in the swinging 60s as the city became the backdrop for a new BBC drama.

The series Ridley Road is adapted from the critically acclaimed novel by Jo Bloom and was announced by the BBC in 2019.

Vintage cars including an old fashioned London Bus and a 1960s Vauxhall Cresta were seen lining the streets near Liverpool's Town Hall in January as filming for the series got underway.

The upcoming thriller is set against a backdrop of the east end of London in the 1960s and reimagines a world where far right fascism is on the rise in the capital, in post-war Britain.

Sky's political drama COBRA

Scenes for series 2 of Sky’s political drama COBRA were shot in Liverpool city centre and New Brighton.

Camera crews were pictured on Marine Promenade in New Brighton earlier this year, shooting a crash scene for show.

COBRA is a Sky One original starring Robert Carlyle and Victoria Hamilton.

It follows the British Government and its COBRA committee - and how they deal with national emergencies.

Bolan’s Shoes

Filming is currently underway in the city for Bolan's Shoes, starring British actor Timothy Spall.

The film is set to feature music by Marc Bolan's T-Rex, known as the pioneers of the glam rock movement of the 1970s.

It is designed as a celebration of that decade’s culture and will include scenes shot on Matthew Street and Liverpool's waterfront.

Bolan’s Shoes will be released in 2022.

Munich

Liverpool city centre was transformed into 1930s Germany for filming of the drama Munich '38

The film follows A British civil servant and a German diplomat, who travel to Munich for an emergency conference in the run-up to the Second World War.

Based on the international bestseller by Robert Harris, Munich, stars Jeremy Irons as British PM, Neville Chamberlain, alongside Jannis Niehwöhner and George MacKay.

Stay Close

The team behind Netflix thriller The Stranger have reunited to make another gripping drama called Stay Close.

Based on Harlan Coben’s novel, Stay Close follows three people living comfortable lives, who are all concealing dark secrets.

Scenes have been shot across the Liverpool City Region including on Formby Beach, St Helens’ Dream and Halton’s Silver Jubilee Bridge.
