BBC Ambulance: The touching reason a young paramedic wanted to save lives

A new series of Ambulance is set to begin on BBC One and features a touching story about why a young paramedic decided she wanted to go into the profession. This series of Ambulance is filmed in the north east of England and follows ambulance crews and control room staff as they do their job.

Becky is a paramedic and after treating a patient who was suffering from seizures, where they were forced to stop the ambulance and pull over as the patient suffered another incident, she was reminded why she joined the profession. Her dad suffered from seizures while she was growing up and she had many memories of paramedics attending her home to treat her dad.

She said: "Anytime I go to someone who is having a fit it does remind me of my dad" and recounted memories she had of paramedics from as early as three years old. Becky spoke about how those paramedics inspired her. You can get more TV news and other story updates straight to your inbox by subscribing to our newsletters here.

She said: "We had paramedics coming in and out of our house a lot, they weren't just looking after my dad they were looking after us all and that's the way I try to be when I'm looking after a patient, it's not just about the patient you are looking after everyone that is there."

After an emotional call-out, which saw Becky and other ambulance crews treat a 79-year-old man who passed away after attempts from the paramedics at CPR, Becky reflected on losing her own dad in 2021. She said: "Luckily, with my dad, he got to see me qualify, he was definitely proud when he saw me in my uniform, it's 100% made me be able to relate to people better...we are someone's lifeline which is all I ever wanted to be."

Ambulance begins on BBC One on Thursday, October 13, at 9pm.
