BBC Ambulance: The heartbreaking moment a devoted husband battled to save his wife of 44 years

This was the heartbreaking moment a devoted husband battled to save his wife of 44 years after she fell ill at home.

Tonight's episode of BBC Ambulance, the first in a new series highlighting the work of the North West Ambulance Service , focused on 82-year-old Shirley who was taken ill as husband Gordon tried to help.

She sadly died five days later.

Gordon told the call handler: "She's sort of gasping for breath, like she's choking.

"She's gone to bed tonight, she's had a cup of tea, and I can't waken her up, I can't talk to her.

"She's sort of breathing in, and it's like her mouth's full of something but she's not being sick."

The call handler asked Gordon to take Shirley out of her bed and lay her on the floor, before advising him how to perform CPR on his wife.

Viewers could hear the call as Gordon followed their advice.

"Come on darling," Gordon told Shirley. "Don't fight. Don't fight me. Please.

"Right I've got her on the floor. She's foaming at the mouth now."

Paramedics Jade and Jonny raced to the 'category one' call, which was initially reported as a potential cardiac arrest.

But when they arrived at the house, the paramedics thought it might be something else which was affecting Shirley.

Jade said: "You're ready for a cardiac arrest, then it's not a cardiac arrest.

"With your training, you just deal with what you're seeing.

"We're not trying to diagnose. I'll just treat what I see, and I think, I've no idea what's going on with this patient.

"I'm just doing what I can, and then when I get to hospital they are the ones who will find out what's wrong.

"I just need to keep them alive."

Jade and Jonny were able to stabilise Shirley before rushing her to hospital, where Gordon, who revealed that the couple have no family, stayed by her side.

As both paramedics were visibly emotional after helping Shirley, Jade said: "You feel so helpless, there's nothing you can do is there.

"I couldn't say anything to Gordon, because I don't think the outcome is going to be nice.

"You can't say 'oh I hope she's alright', because I feel like she's not going to be.

"And they'll have been married for years."

The closing credits of the show revealed that Shirley died five days later with Gordon by his side.
