BBC Ambulance: Dramatic moment crews raced to house fire with five people trapped inside

The hit BBC show Ambulance went behind-the-scenes with ambulance crews as they raced to a house fire in Bolton with five people reported trapped inside.

The call about the fire in Farnworth, which came from the fire service, came into the call centre on a busy Friday night.

A call went out for five ambulances at the time 156 emergency calls were being dealt with across Greater Manchester and half were still waiting for an ambulance.

When the ambulance crew arrived the fire service had brought the fire under control but two people were reported missing or trapped inside the house.

Six patients were treated at the scene and, as a paramedic waited to take two people with smoke inhalation to hospital, the news came in that the Royal Bolton Hospital wasn't accepting any more 'resus patients'.

Paramedic Gari decided to take matters into his own hands and take them to the hospital and 'take the flak' for the decision so as not to separate them from them family.

"They're part of the family and I don't want to take them anywhere else," he said.

"So what I'm going to do is take them to Bolton, take the flak myself because I think it would be a callous consultant that says 'no you can't bring their parents or their grandparents to where they are."

The BAFTA award-winning series on BBC One follows the work of staff from North West Ambulance Service in and around Greater Manchester.
