BBC Ambulance captures horrifying moment man phones 999 and says he has killed his wife

In tonight's episode of BBC's Ambulance viewers heard a harrowing 999 phone call where a man said he had killed his wife.

The disturbing exchange between the caller and the North West Ambulance Service opened the show and left viewers in awe of the job the emergency services face every day.

A man called 999 after killing his bed-bound wife with a lump of iron.

Here is the full transcription from the programme: *Some may find this distressing*

EastEnders heartbreak as Bailey's mum Dinah to take her own life  

999 handler: "Hello it is North West Ambulance Service Here, just tell me exactly what has happened."

Caller: "I've killed my wife."

999 handler: "You've killed your wife? Right, tell me exactly what has happened."

Caller: "She can't walk, incontinent and I can't cope. So I have killed her."

999 handler: "Are you with the patient now?"

Caller: "Yes"

999 handler: "Right, how old is the patient?"

Caller: "86."

999 handler: "Were any weapons involved?"

Caller: "Only a lump of iron."

999 handler: "A lump of iron, OK. Is there any serious bleeding?"

Caller: "Not really."

999 handler: "Are you right by her now?"

Caller: "No, she's in the bedroom."

999 handler: "Are you able to go to her with the phone?"

Caller: "No."

999 handler: "You can't go to her?"

Caller: "No."

999 handler: "What's stopping you from going to her?"

Caller: "What do you want to know?"

999 handler: "I just want to try and help her."

Caller: "She's dead."

999 handler: "She's dead? OK, we are sending you some help right away, we are going to get there as quickly as we can, OK?"

The 999 operative then turns to paramedic Justin and tells him that the caller has hit her with a bar and smothered her.

999 handler: "Say that again, sorry."

Caller: "There's a little girl's party next door, don't use sirens and spoil it."

999 handler: "OK, well we just need to come and help her as quickly as we can."

Caller: "She's dead, that's all there is."

999 handler: "OK we are going to get there as soon as we can."

Caller: "Thank you."

There's a slight pause.

Caller: "The police have just arrived."

999 handler: "The police have just arrived there now?"

Caller: "Yes. This is the ambulance people."

Through the phone you can hear an emergency service responder saying: "Take a seat for me sir."

They then take the phone and tell the 999 operative: "Hello, we are the police."

999 handler: "OK, you are there with him now?"

Police: "We are yes."

999 handler: "Alright, I will leave you with him. Thank you."

After hanging up the call he says: "Oh my god. That's the second time I have had one of them type of calls."

Justin later confirms he had spoken to the responders who when into the house, he said: "She was dead and he had done exactly what he had said he had done on the phone."

The man who rang 999 pleaded guilty to manslaughter with diminished responsibility. He received a two-year suspended prison sentence.

Following the call Justin tells the BBC team: "I don't think anyone can do this job a length of time and not come away a changed person.

"They've heard things that most humans don't want to hear."

Viewers were overwhelmed with the shocking nature of the call, one said on Twitter: "The call handlers don’t get enough recognition. So much empathy."

Another said: "Are all #Ambulance staff the most polite and professional people ever? They are not fazed by anything considering some of the things they have to deal with."

A third added: "This TV show makes me go through all the emotions."
