BBC viewers will be forced to switch channels at half-time of Norwich v Everton game

The BBC admit that it is "not ideal" to have to show Norwich City's Premier League clash with Everton over two different channels after coming under fire for the decision.

The meeting at Carrow Road on Wednesday, June 24 will be the broadcaster's second live Premier League match of the restarted season, after screening Bournemouth vs Crystal Palace live this Saturday.

But while that clash will be shown in its entirety on BBC One with a 7.45pm kick-off, the meeting between Daniel Farke's Canaries and Carlo Ancelotti's Blues will be split across two channels.

The first half of the match will be screened on BBC Two with a 6pm kick-off, before viewers will be asked to switch to BBC One for the second period.

The reason for the switch is to accommodate showing the national and regional news on BBC One, and although it is a fairly common practice for viewers to have to switch channels during live BBC sport events such as Wimbledon, the fact that the broadcaster have been given live rights to Premier League games for the first time led to some criticism of the move.

However, the BBC say that there is nothing they can do.

“It’s not ideal, but the news is very important at the moment," said a BBC insider, via the Daily Star.

"This whole thing has been a massive curveball and we don’t think it’s too much to ask for viewers to change the channel.”

Norwich will resume Premier League action with a game at home to Southampton on Friday, when they will be missing one of their players after he tested positive for coronavirus.

Everton host title-chasing Liverpool in a Merseyside derby on Sunday.
